Do I need to bed the receiver, and should the barrel be free floated?

No to both, in most cases, but talk to your gunsmith first.

McMillan stocks are built drop-in ready or custom fitted, so bedding isn’t required to get accurate results. That said, every rifle build is different, we recommend talking to your gunsmith or rifle builder and getting their recommendation based on your specific setup.

On free floating: after installing thousands of stocks, we’ve found that 98% of rifles shoot most accurately when the barrel is free floated. If you’re unsure whether your build falls into that 2%, that’s another conversation worth having with your gunsmith before you commit either way.
