What’s the difference between a drop-in fit and a bedded fit?

A drop-in fit means the stock is inletted to accept your action without modification. A bedded fit means a gunsmith adds material around the action to lock out any movement and create a truly consistent point of contact.

Most drop-in stocks still need bedding to perform at a precision level. The inlet is close, but not exact, so the action can still shift slightly under recoil unless it’s bedded in.

McMillan stocks are different. We machine aluminum pillars directly into the stock at the action screw locations, essentially building a mini chassis inside the stock itself. Those pillars hold your action square and consistent, shot after shot, without bedding. Shooters looking for even greater precision bed their actions in addition to this mini chassis-like system.
